Driftwood

Living close to the sea, I have inevitably collected some rather lovely bits of driftwood. There is something special about the soft, smooth, sea washed wood. It feels like a gift from the sea itself.
I have a 'driftwood jar' in my studio, & last week I found a use for some of it...

A shell from the beach... a silver star & a tiny bell to catch the light.

It now hangs in the far corner of my kitchen & I am eager to get back to the beach to collect more :)

Sea Fever by John Masefield
"I must down to the seas again,
to the lonely sea and the sky
and all I ask is a tall ship,
and a star to steer her by;

And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song
and the white sails shaking,
And the grey mist in the sea’s face,
and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again,
for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call
that may not be denied;

And all I ask is a windy day
with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume,
and the seagulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again,
to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale's way
where the wind’s like a whetted knife

And all I ask is a merry yarn
From a laughing fellow rover,
and quiet sleep and a sweet dream
when ere the long trip’s over"

I really like your driftwood ornament, it's so pretty. I remember learning John Masefield's poem by heart when I was at primary school. We learned a lot of poetry by heart in the 1950s and a lot of it has stayed with me.

That's lovely Julia. I always look for driftwood and other sea treasures when I visit. Doesn't it burn with a blue or green flame I've heard? x

Love the driftwood mobile...I can't help myself either, I'm always picking up shells, and bits of driftwood, or water washed stones. I love 'Sea Fever', but I actually first heard it as a song by the incomparable Kavisha Mazzella, a local singer/songwriter. Unfortunately she has very little of her work on Youtube and I couldn't find a video her version of 'Sea Fever', but if you go to her myspace page and listen to her song 'Invisible Indivisible', also off her first album, you'll get a feel for her how her version of the poem sounds. Listen to anything she has there, it's all wonderful!

A lovely sea-gift sculpture (plus I love your yellow walls and blue shelves!)
Also a lovely surprise to see 'Sea Fever' written here. Its a song very much interwoven with my childhood - my Dad made this poem into a beautiful song about Dungarvan Shore where he spent much of his own childhood and I so love hearing him sing it...

I love your Storybook Cornwall prints! I can see how your surroundings and gifts from nature (driftwood) have inspired your lovely, organic-feeling artwork. I really dig the pics of your lovely cottage corners. Your surroundings are a wonderful example of how home influences art and soul.
